The film depicts civilian suffering, wartime deprivation, social neglect, pride, and failures of communal responsibility. Although often interpreted as anti-war commentary, director Isao Takahata rejected a simple anti-war label. Its themes are humanistic and historical rather than contemporary identity-political or didactically ideological, with no meaningful race, LGBT, feminist, or DEI messaging.
